Atlético Madrid triumphs 4-2 over Real Madrid in Copa del Rey round of 16 epic showdown

The highly anticipated round of 16 match between Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid lived up to expectations, providing an intense and eventful encounter. The two teams, displaying an unprecedented level of commitment, battled fiercely in Spain at the Wanda Metropolitano, with Atlético seeking revenge for their previous loss in the Spanish Supercup semifinal.

Before kick-off, Antoine Griezmann was honored for breaking the goal-scoring record for Atlético Madrid with 174 goals, surpassing Luis Aragones.

This added extra motivation to the Colchoneros, who started the match on a positive note.

They took the lead at the 39th minute when Lino, positioned in the left side of the box, capitalized on a deflected cross from De Paul, scoring with an inside-foot shot between Lunin’s legs.

Undeterred, Real Madrid managed to equalize just before halftime as Oblak, making a mistake in his attempt to clear, inadvertently scored an own goal.

In the second half, Lunin’s error allowed Álvaro Morata to put Atlético ahead again.

True to their never-give-up attitude, Real Madrid leveled the score once more in the 82nd minute through Joselu, leading the match into extra time.

In the extra period, Atlético Madrid proved more effective, sealing the victory with a third goal, courtesy of Antoine Griezmann.

Despite Real Madrid’s efforts to come back, they conceded a fourth goal, resulting in a 4-2 triumph for Atlético.

The match showcased the determination and skill of both teams, with Atlético emerging victorious in this thrilling encounter.
