Kenyan runner Rhonex Kipruto receives six-year ban for doping violations

Rhonex Kipruto, the famous Kenyan runner and world record holder for the 10-kilometer road race, has been hit with a six-year suspension by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to doping violations. This decision, effective from May 11, 2023, follows the discovery of abnormalities in his biological passport.

Kipruto’s suspension retroactively annuls all his results from September 2, 2018, stripping him of his 2020 world record of 26:24 set in Valencia, Spain, and his bronze medal in the 10,000 meters from the 2019 World Championships.

This latest development intensifies the scrutiny on Kenyan athletics, a realm already troubled by frequent doping scandals and irregularities in athletes’ biological passports.

Kenya’s reputation for producing top-tier long-distance runners now faces further tarnish due to these recurring doping issues.

Kipruto, who had been provisionally suspended since May 17, now faces a significant career setback with this confirmed long-term ban.

The AIU’s ruling not only impacts Kipruto but also raises the stakes for Kenyan and global sports authorities to tighten anti-doping controls.

As the athletic community grapples with these revelations, the call for stricter enforcement and integrity in the sport grows louder.
