Niger / Securing strategic sites: General Tiani reorganises the Niger army

Under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tiani, the Nigerien military has embarked on a comprehensive revitalization process, aimed at bolstering its capabilities and effectiveness in countering security threats.

Since assuming office, significant reforms, new strategic initiatives, and the acquisition of cutting-edge military equipment have been prioritized to enhance the Nigerien army’s stature and operational readiness.

A prime example of this visionary approach is the establishment of a specialized “protection force” tasked with safeguarding critical infrastructure from potential terrorist attacks.

This force is particularly focused on securing vital assets such as uranium mines and oil wells, which are pivotal to Niger’s economic stability and national security.

Given the ongoing challenges posed by jihadist violence since 2015, these proactive measures have become increasingly essential.

The newly formed protection force, known as the Command for Forces for Protection and Development, has a clear mandate to ensure the security of strategic installations.

This includes heightened surveillance and protection measures for key facilities like the uranium mines in the northern regions and the oil extraction sites in the northeast.

Additionally, strategic routes vital for trade, such as the Lomé-Ouagadougou-Niamey corridor, will also benefit from enhanced security protocols.

To augment the manpower of this protection force, a recruitment drive is set to commence on July 1st, with plans to enlist 10,000 additional personnel.

This strategic expansion is not only geared towards strengthening security capabilities but also addresses the urgent need to fortify Niger’s defenses against evolving terrorist threats.

These proactive measures underscore General Tiani’s steadfast commitment to modernize and professionalize the Nigerien armed forces.

Through comprehensive reforms and the adoption of state-of-the-art military technologies, Niger is now better equipped to safeguard its strategic interests and ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.
