Spain triumphs over Germany in Euro 2024 quarter-final thriller

The Euro 2024 quarter-finals kicked off with a thrilling encounter between Spain and Germany on Friday afternoon.

The highly anticipated match delivered on all fronts, culminating in a dramatic finish.

The game started with high intensity, as Spain dominated possession while Germany responded with physical play.

An early casualty of this intensity was Pedri, who had to leave the field injured after a tough challenge from Toni Kroos in the 8th minute.

Both teams created dangerous opportunities, but goalkeepers Unai Simon and Manuel Neuer kept the scoreline level at halftime (0-0).

The second half saw Spain break the deadlock. Lamine Yamal, on a brilliant run down the right, set up Dani Olmo, who slotted the ball home with a powerful shot in the 51st minute (1-0).

Germany, facing elimination, pressed hard for an equalizer. They came close when Fullkrug hit the post in the 76th minute.

Their persistence paid off when Florian Wirtz scored in the 89th minute, sending the game into extra time (1-1).

In extra time, both teams fought fiercely. Spain, hampered by injuries to three starting forwards, struggled to create chances, while Germany continued to press.

A potential penalty for a handball by Cucurella went uncalled. Just as the match seemed destined for penalties, Dani Olmo delivered a perfect cross to Mikel Merino, who headed the ball past Neuer in the 120th minute (2-1).

Spain’s late goal secured their victory, eliminating Germany from the tournament.
