Togo/China: The two leaders agree on a comprehensive strategic partnership in the interests of their respective countries

Beijing, China – During the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, Togo’s President Faure Gnassingbé held a significant meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This tête-à-tête, followed by broader discussions involving delegations from both nations, marked a pivotal moment in the longstanding relationship between Togo and China.

According to official sources, the discussions centered on the historical and bilateral ties that have united Togo and China for decades.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the current state of their cooperation, which they described as excellent.

They agreed to elevate this relationship to a more strategic level, with a focus on deepening cooperation across several key sectors of mutual interest.

This enhanced cooperation will particularly target areas such as healthcare, infrastructure development, agricultural transformation, water management, and connectivity, according to President Gnassingbé.

The decision to reinforce these bilateral ties follows a series of preliminary discussions held in Lomé and Beijing.

This latest development comes on the heels of a visit to Lomé by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on January 16, as part of his African tour aimed at exploring further avenues for strengthening the partnership between the two nations.

The China-Togo relationship, which has flourished over several decades, has seen renewed vigor in recent years, characterized by regular exchanges between the leaders of the two countries.

As Togo and China move towards this strategic partnership, both nations look forward to even closer cooperation, fostering development and growth in multiple sectors that are crucial to their shared future.
