Mali: CFAF 3 billion to help flood victims

Mali is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis after catastrophic floods swept through 18 regions, leaving 42 people dead and displacing more than 18,000 households. In response to the disaster, the Malian government has swiftly mobilized resources to assist those affected, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding its population.

On August 23, 2024, the President of the Transition declared a state of national disaster, highlighting the gravity of the situation. This declaration triggered emergency protocols, enabling immediate relief efforts for the victims.

Shortly afterward, Minister of Health and Social Development, Colonel Assa Badiallo Touré, issued an urgent appeal for 3 billion FCFA to address the growing humanitarian needs and to prevent severe health risks stemming from the floods.

The government’s prompt action has drawn praise, as it underscores the importance of a coordinated and rapid response to a disaster of this scale.

The Malian state’s efforts reflect a clear commitment to ensuring that those affected are not left to face the crisis alone, while also engaging the international community for additional support.

Countries like the United States, Belgium, and China have already expressed their solidarity and pledged assistance.

Interim Humanitarian Coordinator Mohamed Askia Touré reiterated the support of international humanitarian organizations, stressing the need for strengthened preventive measures to avoid future disasters of this magnitude.

Through these swift and decisive actions, the Malian government is demonstrating effective crisis management and a strong resolve to protect its citizens.

In the face of such a challenging situation, continued efforts will be vital to providing relief for affected families and preventing a potential health emergency.

The government’s leadership in this crisis sets a commendable example of responsible governance.
