Mauricio Pochettino appointed as New US Men’s National Team Coach
The Argentine tactician takes charge ahead of the 2026 World Cup on home soil.
Mauricio Pochettino has been officially named the new head coach of the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT), replacing Gregg Berhalter, who was dismissed in July.
The 52-year-old, best known for his managerial stints at Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain, and Chelsea, will lead the team through the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US.
The US Soccer Federation announced the appointment in a statement, highlighting Pochettino’s vast experience and his tactical expertise as key factors in their decision.
“Pochettino is a highly respected coach who has achieved success with some of Europe’s top clubs. His dynamic style and ability to develop teams will be vital as we look ahead to the World Cup on home turf,” the statement read.
Pochettino expressed his excitement about the challenge of leading a national team for the first time. “The energy, passion, and ambition to create something truly historic convinced me to take this role,” he said. “I see a talented group of players and a passionate fanbase. Together, we will build something special that the entire nation can be proud of.”
Pochettino’s debut as head coach is scheduled for October 12, when the USMNT will face Panama in a friendly.
His task will be to prepare the squad for the 2026 World Cup, aiming to improve on recent performances, including the early exit from the 2024 Copa América, which led to Berhalter’s dismissal.
The appointment marks a new era for US soccer, with hopes that Pochettino’s leadership will elevate the team to new heights on the global stage.
