Ballon d’Or 2024 frustration : Florentino Pérez targets Journalist votes

Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has sparked controversy with his critical remarks about Ballon d’Or voting, particularly targeting journalists from smaller football nations. Pérez’s frustration was evident as he lamented the outcome of this year’s award, which saw Manchester City’s Rodri claim the title, leaving Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior out of contention.

There are journalists no one knows who voted this year,” Pérez said. “Without the votes from countries like Uganda, Namibia, Albania, and Finland, Vinícius would have won the Ballon d’Or.”

One of the journalists singled out, Sheefeni Nicodemus of Namibia, defended his position. Nicodemus, who did not include Vinícius in his top 10, addressed Pérez’s comments on Cadena Ser, interpreting the statement as dismissive of smaller nations’ perspectives.

I suspect these are the words of someone frustrated, like Mr. Pérez,” Nicodemus remarked. “It seems he believes that people from my country or others mentioned have less significant votes because we are considered inferior. My question is simple: if I were from a major football nation and disagreed with your opinion, what would your argument be?”

Pérez’s remarks have reignited debates about the Ballon d’Or voting system, which involves journalists from FIFA-affiliated nations worldwide.

Critics have called his comments dismissive and undermining the principle of global representation in one of football’s most prestigious awards.

While the Real Madrid president’s frustration reflects his loyalty to his players, his incendiary tone has drawn widespread backlash, emphasizing the importance of respecting diverse voices in the sport.
