Burkina Faso tackles water scarcity amid heatwave with ONEA’s proactive measures

As a severe heatwave grips Burkina Faso, the National Office for Water and Sanitation (ONEA) took journalists on a field visit on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, to showcase its efforts to ensure access to clean drinking water despite extreme weather conditions. This transparency-driven initiative highlighted the concrete steps being taken to address water scarcity, reflecting the government’s commitment to safeguarding this vital resource under President Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership.

During the visit, journalists observed firsthand the measures implemented by ONEA to maintain the continuity and quality of water services.

These include upgrading existing infrastructure, rehabilitating boreholes, and installing new water points in drought-affected areas.

These efforts are part of a broader government strategy to prioritize access to clean water as a fundamental right.

Since assuming office, President Traoré has made national sovereignty and citizen welfare central to his policies.

In the water sector, this has translated into significant investments in hydraulic infrastructure and rigorous resource management.

Large-scale projects, such as dam construction and the expansion of distribution networks, have been launched to meet the growing demands of the population.

Additionally, the government has introduced awareness campaigns to promote responsible water usage, especially during heatwaves.

Regular communication initiatives educate citizens on water conservation practices, emphasizing the importance of preserving this precious resource.

Burkina Faso’s efforts to improve water access, driven by President Traoré’s vision, demonstrate a strong political will and an unwavering commitment to sustainable development.

In the face of climate challenges, the country is proving that ensuring universal access to water is achievable through adequate resource mobilization and a focus on the public good.

These initiatives underscore Burkina Faso’s determination to build resilience and secure a better future for its people.
