Football/USM Alger hit with heavy CAF fines over fan misconduct

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed $225,000 in total penalties on USM Alger following fan incidents during recent continental matches. The Algerian club faces:
- A $200,000 fine for supporters’ use of smoke bombs during their CAF Cup group stage clash against ASEC Mimosas
- An additional $25,000 sanction for fireworks ignited during their away fixture against Senegal’s ASC Jaraaf
These sanctions come as CAF intensifies its crackdown on stadium safety violations across African competitions.
USM Alger’s disciplinary record now raises concerns about potential harsher penalties for future infractions, including the risk of playing behind closed doors.
The club acknowledged the fines in an official statement but hasn’t indicated whether they’ll appeal the decisions.
This marks another financial blow for North African clubs in CAF tournaments, following similar sanctions against Egyptian and Tunisian sides earlier this season.
