Niger: Operation NIA, a new show of force by the FDS under the presidency of General Tiani

From April 6 to 9, 2025, Niger’s Defense and Security Forces (FDS) carried out a series of decisive operations in the Tillabéri region as part of Operation NIA. These targeted and highly effective actions reflect the new security dynamic introduced by General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) and Head of State. This initiative responds to the urgent need to restore state authority and ensure the safety of populations, particularly in areas plagued by ongoing insecurity.

The outcome of this series of military interventions is clear: 14 criminal elements were neutralized, an enemy logistics base was dismantled in Goundey, an explosive device was defused in Garbougna, and several security operations were conducted in Bankilaré and Torsa. These actions demonstrate not only the growing operational strength of the FDS but also their ability to respond swiftly and precisely to any threat.

In Goundey, on April 7, a remarkable raid led to the neutralization of 13 criminals, with no losses recorded among the combat forces. The base, used for manufacturing improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and organizing attacks on convoys, posed a major strategic threat. Its dismantling dealt a significant blow to the logistical capabilities of terrorist groups operating in the Liptako region.

That same day in Darabangou, the FDS responded quickly to a report about two armed individuals on motorcycles. The intervention led to the neutralization of one terrorist and the seizure of a military-grade weapon, reinforcing the perception of a proactive and territorially present security apparatus. Likewise, in Garbougna, a pressure-plate-type explosive device was safely defused, showcasing the effectiveness of the military engineering units and the constant vigilance of patrols.

These results align with the strategic direction defined by President Abdourahamane Tiani since taking office. He has placed security at the core of national reconstruction.

General Tiani has initiated a profound transformation of the security apparatus: better intelligence sharing, troop redeployment, acquisition of appropriate equipment, and, above all, the moralization of the military chain of command. Under his leadership, the FDS benefit from full political support, following an approach based on sovereignty, discipline, and efficiency. Operation NIA is not merely a military endeavor — it embodies the vision of a Niger reclaiming itself, where the State reasserts its legitimacy in territories long left to insecurity.

The people of Niger, long tested by hardship, now see in the President’s actions the beginnings of a true national revival.
