Togo/ Faure Gnassingbé intensifies mediation efforts between DRC and Rwanda

In his capacity as an African Union-appointed mediator, Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé has embarked on a fresh diplomatic mission to Kigali this Monday, reinforcing his commitment to easing tensions between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. Against the volatile backdrop of armed group activity in eastern DRC, Gnassingbé seeks to facilitate constructive dialogue between the neighboring nations.

A trusted mediator
President Gnassingbé, recognized for his discreet yet firm diplomatic approach, is scheduled to hold private talks with Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

The discussions will focus on the root causes of the conflict, its regional implications, and the involvement of armed factions.

Togo has reiterated its readiness to work with all stakeholders toward “a lasting solution to persistent tensions” and to “revitalize friendly and cooperative relations” between the two countries.

A delicate context
The mediation comes at a critical juncture, with Kinshasa and Kigali continuing to trade accusations over support for rebel groups, including the M23 and FDLR.

Recent developments—such as the DRC government’s suspension of former President Joseph Kabila’s PPRD party and treason charges against him following his visit to Goma, labeled by authorities as “under Rwandan occupation”—highlight the escalating friction.

A Beacon of hope
Gnassingbé’s initiative underscores Africa’s determination to resolve its conflicts through diplomacy.

His repeated engagements in Kigali demonstrate a sustained commitment to regional stability.

As violence persists in eastern DRC, his mediation offers a glimmer of hope for affected communities and reinforces the importance of impartial dialogue in achieving lasting peace.

Why It matters
The Togolese leader’s efforts reflect a broader African push for self-reliant conflict resolution. If successful, this mediation could mark a turning point in one of the continent’s most protracted crises.
