Burkina-Faso/Russia: forward-looking strategic cooperation under the banner of skills transfer

Since the Saint Petersburg summit in 2023, this marks the second one-on-one meeting between Head of State Captain Ibrahim Traoré and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In Moscow at the invitation of his Russian counterpart to attend the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the Russian Great Victory, Captain Traoré and his host reviewed the state of their cooperation. This meeting represents a significant milestone in strengthening bilateral relations between Ouagadougou and Moscow, built on a shared vision of strategic partnership.

During the meeting, President Ibrahim Traoré expressed interest in exploring new avenues of cooperation, particularly in the field of knowledge transfer—reflecting his ambition to build a strong foundation of sovereignty supported by science, technology, and education. This sets the tone for a forward-looking collaboration.

Defense, science, education, and technology: the new dynamic between Burkina Faso and Russia is grounded in a mutual desire to develop a win-win partnership. President Traoré emphasized that national development will depend not only on a strong military but also on a well-educated youth and the modernization of local industries.

Beyond its symbolic significance, this visit confirms the growing strength of a pragmatic and firmly strategic cooperation between Moscow and Ouagadougou. Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s visit to Russia reflects the Russo-Burkinabe friendship, recalling the historical contribution of thousands of Burkinabè to the fight against Nazism, and drawing a parallel with today’s fight against terrorism.
