Togo: Accelerating towards gender equity with the “ƉEZƆ” project

In its strong commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable Togo, the Togolese government, under the leadership of Council President Faure Gnassingbé, continues to make steady progress in strengthening the role of women in all spheres of society.

Launched in Lomé at the end of last month, the “ƉEZƆ” project—meaning “get involved” in the Ewe language—aims to promote gender equality, uphold women’s rights, and strengthen the legal framework for a more just society. This ambitious program, supported by German Cooperation (GIZ), is backed by a budget of 3.9 billion FCFA and will run for three years. Its main goal is to reinforce gender equality and increase women’s participation in public and political life.

In a context where equity and female representation are becoming central to inclusive development, “ƉEZƆ” marks a pivotal step forward. It brings together a wide range of stakeholders—from religious leaders to women’s NGOs, traditional chiefs, universities, and gender units within ministries—demonstrating the multi-actor commitment promoted by Togolese authorities.

This project is part of a broader set of initiatives implemented over several years under the leadership of Council President Faure Gnassingbé, who has consistently shown his intent to place women at the heart of national decision-making. The most recent example is the notable appointment of 10 women senators among the 20 newly designated members of the Senate, reflecting a policy of inclusion and recognition of women’s strategic role in governance.

Guided by the strategic vision of President Faure Gnassingbé, this project is aligned with the broader reform agenda focused on women’s empowerment and the ongoing struggle for equality across all sectors.
