Burkina Faso: Government communication, when the State strengthens cohesion around public information

In a firm effort to strengthen institutional communication and ensure fair and accessible information for all, the Minister of Communication, Culture, Arts and Tourism, and Government Spokesperson, Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo, chaired an important meeting on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, between the Government Information Service (SIG) and the Directors of Communication and Press Relations (DCRP) from various ministries.

This meeting is part of an initiative to strengthen cohesion around the dissemination of government actions, particularly in the context of the ongoing Popular Progressive Revolution (RPP) in Burkina Faso. It had a dual objective: first, to raise awareness among public communicators about the need to revitalize government communication, and second, to provide concrete guidelines to enhance the impact of their efforts on the ground.

Minister Ouédraogo emphasized the importance of increasing visibility for the reforms and innovative projects led by the different ministries. He stressed that the DCRPs must “elevate their role by going beyond traditional communication channels and exploring new tools that are more interactive and better suited to today’s realities.” This initiative, he noted, should also engage the Burkinabe diaspora and the international public.

On this point, the minister encouraged the expansion of public institutions’ presence on digital platforms, underlining that these platforms now represent a crucial tool to effectively reach both national and global audiences. To that end, participants were presented with a strategic and operational plan aimed at boosting government communication, scheduled for implementation in the second half of the year.

The strategy is designed to adapt communication practices to current challenges, including disinformation, the digital divide, and the need for more inclusive and community-based communication. Finally, Pingdwendé Gilbert Ouédraogo urged DCRPs to work in synergy, pool their resources, and strengthen their solidarity to effectively and coherently support the implementation of the RPP’s objectives.

Through this initiative, the Burkinabe government reaffirms its commitment to ensuring reliable, shared, and accessible information for all citizens, in a spirit of unity and progress.
