Burkina Faso – UN: For frank cooperation without duplicity in the fight against terrorism

The President of Burkina Faso’s Transitional Legislative Assembly, Ousmane Bougouma, met with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, in Ouagadougou on Friday, May 23, 2025. The discussion focused on bilateral cooperation, development, and most importantly, the fight against terrorism—a scourge that continues to undermine the stability of the country and the region.

While the presence of the United Nations shows a clear interest in Sahelian issues, it is high time this cooperation went beyond standard diplomatic formalities. As a member of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), Burkina Faso expects from its international partners a clear, sincere, and unambiguous commitment. Faced with brutal terrorism that destroys lives and hinders progress, polished speeches are no longer enough.

Following the meeting, Leonardo Santos Simão praised Burkina Faso’s efforts to restore peace and social cohesion, and reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting development programs. He also encouraged continued dialogue between ECOWAS and the AES, referring to the recent meeting held in Bamako.

But this goodwill must go beyond mere statements. Burkina Faso expects strong action, firm support, clear condemnation of barbaric attacks, and unconditional security cooperation. The fight against terrorism should not be subject to political calculations or diplomatic restraint.

The Burkinabè people, wounded but resilient, need honest and supportive partners who understand their reality. In this struggle, any duplicity would be a betrayal. The time has come for the United Nations to prove, through concrete actions, that its commitment to Burkina Faso is full and unequivocal.
