Burkina Faso / Faso Mêbo: A Presidential Initiative for Structural Transformation of the Country

Launched by the highest Burkinabe authorities, the Presidential Initiative “Faso Mêbo” reflects a break from the country’s economic and food vulnerabilities. In a context marked by security instability, climate disruptions, and chronic dependence on food imports, this initiative presents itself as a bold response aimed at deep and structural transformation.

At the heart of Faso Mêbo lies a strong political will to strengthen food sovereignty by investing heavily in local agriculture, agro-food processing, and the fair distribution of products. The objective is not only to increase production, but also to reorganize value chains around priority agricultural products, while integrating small farmers, women, and youth into the formal economy.

The initiative envisions the creation of modern production hubs supported by irrigation infrastructure, processing units, and storage centers. This decentralized model aims to stimulate the local economy, curb rural exodus, and enhance communities’ resilience to external shocks. By improving access to credit, improved seeds, agricultural technologies, and markets, Faso Mêbo could also play a key role in formalizing the rural economy, which has long been marginalized.

On an institutional level, Faso Mêbo calls for an overhaul of public agricultural policies. It promotes intersectoral coordination among the Ministries of Agriculture, Industry, Economy, and Environment. This cross-cutting approach could foster sustainable reforms based on strategic and inclusive planning.

In short, Faso Mêbo is not a one-time operation but an integrated development strategy capable of triggering long-term transformation. By addressing the structural causes of rural poverty and food insecurity, the initiative offers renewed hope to millions of Burkinabe and represents a new way of approaching economic governance.

If implemented with rigor, transparency, and citizen participation, Faso Mêbo could become a powerful catalyst for sovereignty and national dignity—paving the way for a resilient, self-reliant, and prosperous Burkina Faso.
