Burkina Faso: Security VDPs raise awareness among road users about civic-minded behavior on the roads

The initiative of the National Road Safety Office (ONASER) to train Volunteer Road Safety Assistants in the Nakambé region deserves strong praise. At a time when road accidents are increasingly frequent—1,877 crashes including 69 deaths in July alone—this action reflects a clear commitment to protecting citizens and strengthening safety on the roads. Training 50 volunteers from different localities is a concrete step toward lasting change.

These volunteers will not only serve as security agents but also as educators and role models for road civility. Their presence in the field will help raise awareness among road users, prevent risky behavior, and save lives. It is both a smart and human-centered initiative.

The Burkinabe government also deserves recognition for supporting and inspiring such actions. By emphasizing prevention, education, and discipline, it demonstrates that the well-being of the population remains at the heart of its priorities. This type of initiative should be expanded and supported throughout the country. It is through such measures that Burkina Faso can build safer roads and foster a more responsible society.

These volunteers are considered the “Road Safety VDPs” and will work closely with the National Road Safety Office to help reduce traffic accidents through traffic regulation techniques and first aid practices. They thus become guardians of safety and ambassadors of road civility.
