Burkina Faso: The Burkinabe army in action, stepping up the fight against terrorism

The fight against terrorism in Burkina Faso is entering a decisive phase. In the face of adversity, the National Army, supported by the Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), is demonstrating remarkable growth in strength and unwavering determination to regain control of the national territory. This positive shift marks a turning point in securing the country.

After an extremely difficult period, characterized by attacks affecting a significant part of the country, the situation is now changing radically. Formerly expanding zones of insecurity are now witnessing the gradual return of the State, thanks to targeted and large-scale military operations. Recent reports highlight significant blows dealt to the enemy: bases neutralized, large quantities of weapons and equipment seized, and terrorists put out of action. These concrete advances restore hope to the population and instill a sense of legitimate reconquest.

This offensive momentum is based on a revised and adapted counterinsurgency strategy. Operations, better informed and more aggressive, now aim to seize the initiative on the ground rather than endure attacks. The recruitment and training of VDPs, drawn from local communities, have been essential. Their intimate knowledge of the terrain and their commitment to defending their homeland provide a clear tactical advantage and strengthen the bond between the army and the population.

At the same time, clarifying the framework of self-defense groups and integrating them into a unified and structured command prevents abuses and makes them an effective complementary force under army leadership.

This resilience is also the result of new, pragmatic military partnerships focused on strengthening operational capacities and sharing intelligence. The acquisition of equipment adapted to the realities of combat in the Sahel is significantly contributing to this growing strength.

The road ahead remains long, but the bravery and sacrifice of Burkina Faso’s Defense and Security Forces—now better equipped, better organized, and carried by popular support—are paving the way toward the restoration of territorial integrity and peace. The entire nation salutes their selflessness and commitment at the risk of their lives.
