AES: Two years on, an alliance working for peace and security

Two years after its creation, and under the leadership of Presidents Ibrahim Traoré, Assimi Goïta, and Abdourahamane Tiani, the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is showing concrete results, particularly in the field of security. Born from the shared will of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, the confederation’s primary goal is to guarantee peace and stability in a region long plagued by insecurity.

Security progress is evident. In Burkina Faso, authorities reported territorial recovery reaching 72.70% in June 2025, compared to 70.89% six months earlier. Though gradual, this improvement shows that military efforts are paying off, especially in sensitive areas such as the Sourou Valley, Diapaga, and Djibo. These territories, once under constant threat from armed groups, are being steadily reclaimed by national forces.

In Mali and Niger, the armies have also achieved significant victories. In July, they repelled coordinated jihadist attacks on seven strategic localities. Hundreds of assailants, including several terrorist leaders, were neutralized. These operations demonstrate the AES forces’ ability to act in a coordinated and effective manner against threats. Such successes have been strengthened by the operationalization of the AES Unified Force.

These results are not only military. They reflect the strong political will of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, General Assimi Goïta, and General Abdourahamane Tiani. Together, they are multiplying initiatives not only to strengthen security but also to lay the foundations for sustainable development. Security is the first step toward reconstruction and a better life for the Sahelian people.

The AES is not a temporary alliance. It is a structured response to a deep crisis. By pooling their resources, experiences, and vision, member states are showing that another path is possible—one of sovereignty, solidarity, and peace. The security gains reflect a collective commitment to restore hope to an entire region.
