Gabon: President Oligui Nguema drives structural reform for an efficient and equitable healthcare system

In response to the legitimate and pressing expectations of the Gabonese people, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema has placed the renovation of the health system at the heart of his social mandate priorities. The working session he chaired on January 20, 2026, with social partners in the sector was not merely another meeting. It constitutes a strong political act, marking the launch of a profound and structural reform for healthcare in Gabon.

The challenges are well-known and immense: the need for better hospital governance, the demand for consistent quality of care across the entire territory, and the necessity to restore trust between users, professionals, and institutions.

Refusing cosmetic solutions, the Head of State has made major institutional decisions to address them. He approved the creation of a High Authority of Health (HAS).

This independent body will be crucial for assessing and guaranteeing the quality of medical practices, healthcare facilities, and medicines, thereby establishing a benchmark of excellence for the entire nation.

Simultaneously, the reactivation of the National Health Council reinstates a permanent and inclusive framework for social dialogue.

This assembly will enable the construction of a shared vision and health policies adapted to on-the-ground realities, together with all stakeholders; unions, managers, and experts.

This consultation is not a mere wish; it is the foundation for a sustainable and widely accepted reform.

But President Oligui Nguema has also demonstrated his commitment to efficiency and tangible results by ordering the immediate implementation of these measures.

The instruction to establish a permanent monitoring committee is proof of this. This mechanism will ensure the concrete translation of decisions, guaranteeing that commitments are honored and that reforms advance at a steady pace.

This comprehensive approach . creating a normative authority, revitalizing social dialogue, and instituting rigorous oversight; reveals a clear and determined vision.

It shows the extent to which the Head of State is committed to an in-depth renovation, one that goes beyond merely managing emergencies to build a resilient, equitable, and high-performing health system.

By acting on governance structures, President Oligui Nguema is addressing the root causes of dysfunction.

He is laying the foundations for a system in which quality of care and access for all; two pillars of his social promise; will become a daily reality for every Gabonese citizen.

This is a national ambition that begins with a bold and necessary institutional refoundation.
