Burkina Faso announces historic recruitment of over 210,000 defense personnel
Faced with the unprecedented security crisis that has shaken Burkina Faso for several years, the government has decided to strike a major blow. As part of the new National Development Plan, called RELANCE 2026-2030, presented on May 8, 2026, in Ouagadougou by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Aboubacar Nakanabo, the State plans to recruit over 50,000 defense and security forces (FDS) personnel, an additional 60,000 Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP), as well as more than 100,000 reservists.
The relevance of this initiative is striking. Faced with the vastness of Burkinabe territory and the asymmetric nature of the terrorist threat, the traditional numbers of the armed forces have proven insufficient to cover all sensitive areas.
By raising recruitment to unprecedented levels, the authorities are acting with realism and lucidity: the reconquest of the entire territory by 2030 cannot be achieved without a drastic increase in human resources dedicated to defense.
But this initiative does not rest solely on quantity. It reflects a coherent strategic vision built around three complementary levers.
First, strengthening intelligence and military capabilities to strike with precision and anticipation.
Second, developing a strategic national defense industry to reduce external dependence.
Finally, intensifying security cooperation within the AES space, notably through the scaling up of a unified force capable of acting across borders.
The expected impacts of this policy are considerable. Beyond territorial reconquest, the State aims to achieve strategic autonomy in defense equipment and, above all, to enable the large-scale return of internally displaced persons along with their socio-economic reintegration.
This is the very gamble of the RELANCE plan: making security the foundation of a lasting national refoundation.
Faced with the urgency, this response, commensurate with the challenge, appears not only relevant but indispensable.
