Senegal’s World Cup dream turns sour despite dominant display

Senegal left New Jersey heartbroken, their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread after a cruel 3-2 defeat to Norway, a result that feels more like a tragedy than a mere loss.

The Lions of Teranga were the better side for much of the contest, threatening the Norwegian penalty area repeatedly. Édouard Mendy was sensational in goal, producing breathtaking saves to deny Ajer and Ødegaard.

But the cruelty of football struck twice: first, the uncharacteristic error of Kalidou Koulibaly gifted Marcus Pedersen the opener. Then, early in the second half, another defensive lapse allowed Haaland to pounce on a swift counter.

To their credit, Senegal refused to surrender. Ismaïla Sarr ignited hope with a sublime finish from the assist of Sadio Mané, only for Haaland to crush their revival moments later. The injury-time header of Sarr set up a frantic finale, but Norway clung on.

Adding insult to injury, Mendy limped off with a hamstring problem on the third goal of Norway  a devastating blow for a team already on the brink. Now stranded six points behind France and Norway, the fate of Senegal no longer rests in their own hands.

They must beat Iraq and pray other results favour them among the best third-placed teams.

A dominant display, two goals, heroic saves all for nothing. The adventure of the Lions is all but over.
