Liberia: Joseph Boakai suspends 450 officials over asset declaration failures

Joseph Boakai has suspended over 450 senior government officials, including key ministers, for failing to declare their assets as mandated by anti-corruption laws. The officials, now on unpaid leave, must comply within a month or face further consequences.

The suspensions target high-profile figures, such as the education and health ministers, as well as presidential aides and county administrators.

Boakai emphasized that asset declarations are crucial for transparency and rebuilding public trust in government institutions.

This move aligns with Boakai’s campaign promise to tackle corruption, a pressing issue in Liberia, where his predecessor’s administration faced allegations of mismanagement and excessive spending.

While some applaud the president’s stance, critics argue that a one-month suspension is too lenient to deter corruption effectively.

As suspended officials rush to submit their declarations, the action sparks debate over its impact on Liberia’s broader anti-corruption efforts.
