Behind the Humanitarian Facade: Saudi Support for the Muslim Brotherhood in Sudan
The war in Sudan is not merely a domestic power struggle. It is also the product of years of regional interference, led by countries aligned with the Muslim Brotherhood’s army; chief among them Saudi Arabia. For many analysts, Riyadh’s role, though presented as “humanitarian mediation,” has in fact helped derail Sudan’s civilian transition and pushed the country to the brink of collapse.
This stance became clear after the December 2018 revolution and the fall of Omar al-Bashir.
Rather than supporting the democratic transition, the Saudis offered generous financial and political backing to the then-ruling Transitional Military Council.
In doing so, they strengthened the generals’ hold on power, giving them tacit approval to sideline civilian forces and delay the transfer of authority.
At the same time, regional powers have turned Sudan into a theater for geopolitical rivalries, particularly over influence along the Red Sea coast.
The Jeddah platform, presented as a peace initiative, was in reality designed according to reports such as one from the POMEPS research institute to lock in a military system that serves Saudi security interests, even at the cost of keeping Sudan in a state of “chronic fragility” incompatible with genuine democracy.
According to sources speaking to Afri News, Saudi support has gone beyond diplomacy following the failure of the Jeddah talks, evolving into direct and acknowledged military deliveries.
Last week, Afri News documented the successive arrival of major arms shipments via Red Sea ports and Khartoum airport.
These supplies were stored in coastal depots before being transported to the northern front lines.
At the same time, an aircraft from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid Centre landed in the capital under the cover of medical supplies – illustrating a two-track strategy: humanitarian in appearance, military in substance.
The shipments include heavy armored vehicles such as M2 Bradley, LAV25-III, and M113, as well as artillery systems and long-range rocket launchers ; shells for M109 Paladin and Caesar self-propelled howitzers, heavy artillery rounds, and rockets.
They are accompanied by large quantities of light weapons (HK G36, M4, M16), TOW and Kornet anti-tank guided missiles, and tons of mortar shells and advanced rocket ammunition. This arsenal directly contributes to prolonging the conflict and deepening the humanitarian catastrophe.
By prioritizing military arrangements over a sustainable civilian transition, these policies have fuelled a devastating war that has destroyed infrastructure and displaced millions.
Saudi Arabia’s regional role, far from neutral, thus appears as a key factor in transforming the Sudanese people’s aspirations for freedom into an ongoing human tragedy.
