Sudan: RSF accused of killing over 200 civilians in Village attacks

Over 200 unarmed civilians were killed in a three-day rampage by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in villages north of White Nile state, according to the local rights group Emergency Lawyers. The attacks, targeting areas like al-Kadaris and al-Khelwat, where the military has no presence, involved executions, kidnappings, and looting.

The RSF, once allied with the military, has not responded to the allegations. The two factions, which seized power in a 2021 coup, turned against each other in April 2023 over disagreements on transitioning to civilian rule.

The conflict has displaced 12 million people and claimed tens of thousands of lives, with both sides accused of atrocities.

The RSF recently suffered setbacks, losing control of parts of Khartoum and the strategic Gezira state. However, it is now regrouping, with leaders in Nairobi planning to form a rival government in Darfur and Kordofan.

The group aims to adopt a “political charter for the Government of Peace and Unity,” a move rejected by army chief Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who vows to retake Khartoum.

Gen Burhan, currently based in Port Sudan, was forced to flee the capital after the RSF seized key sites. As the conflict intensifies, humanitarian crises deepen, with no end in sight to the violence.
