AES: The Alliance of Sahel States continues its integration, after defence and development, the focus is now on town planning

The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) continues to make progress in its integration process. After actions in defence, security and development, it is now town planning that is at the centre of discussions.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger want to put in place common rules to better organise town planning and improve living conditions for their populations.

On 18 February 2025, the Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, met the Minister for Town Planning of Niger, Salissou Sahirou Adamou, in the presence of their counterpart from Burkina Faso, Mikaïlou Sidibé.

They discussed the “72 h of the Town Planner” event, but above all the harmonisation of town planning texts in the AES region. This initiative aims to unify town planning policies and create a common fund for social housing.

According to Niger’s Minister of Town Planning, meetings are underway between the three countries to share experiences and adopt a common approach.

The aim is to ensure sustainable urban development and a decent living environment for all.

This new stage marks an important step forward in cooperation between ESA member states.
