Togo strengthens democratic institutions with senate appointments

President Faure Gnassingbé has taken another step in reinforcing Togo’s democratic institutions by appointing 20 senators on Wednesday evening, completing the composition of the country’s Senate. This move marks a significant milestone in strengthening legislative governance and institutional stability.

These appointments follow the senatorial elections held on February 15, 2025, during which 41 senators were elected in accordance with constitutional provisions.

With all 61 seats now filled, the Senate is fully operational and ready to contribute to legislative processes while ensuring better representation of local governments.

President Gnassingbé’s decision underscores his commitment to modernizing Togo’s institutions and fostering a more robust democratic framework.

The establishment of a functional Senate enhances legislative deliberation, facilitates in-depth discussions on national reforms, and provides greater oversight of public policies.

This development reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to build a more structured and effective political system.

Under President Gnassingbé’s leadership, Togo continues to progress toward a more inclusive and well-balanced governance model, reinforcing public confidence in the country’s institutions.
