Football/ Eto’o tightens grip as Cameroon crisis deepens

The Cameroonian football saga took another turn as FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o doubled down on his authority during a tense Canal+ Afrique interview. Speaking to Claude Le Roy before Monday’s player-led peace plea, the football legend delivered a veiled ultimatum to coach Marc Brys: “I’ll be the last to abandon your ship – because the signature is mine.”

While acknowledging Brys’ unconventional appointment (reportedly imposed by Cameroon’s sports ministry), Eto’o emphasized institutional hierarchy remains non-negotiable.

This power play comes despite captain Vincent Aboubakar’s public appeal for unity ahead of Tuesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Libya.

Key tensions :

  • Brys’ continued exclusion of Eto’o’s preferred assistant Joachim Mununga
  • The coach’s media statements bypassing federation protocols
  • Players caught in political crossfire during qualifying campaign

Eto’o’s carefully worded remarks – simultaneously diplomatic and firm – suggest little concession coming from FECAFOOT headquarters.

As qualification hopes hang in balance, Cameroon’s football family watches whether this institutional standoff will compromise on-field performance.

The Libya match may reveal if Brys’ tactical plans can survive federation politics.
