Togo: Togolese Senate headed by Barqué Moussa, a milestone for democracy and governance under Faure Gnassingbé
On March 6, 2025, Togo took a significant step in its democratic process with the launch of the inaugural session of the country’s first-ever Senate. This historic moment marked the official introduction of a new institution into Togo’s political framework, underscoring President Faure Gnassingbé’s commitment to strengthening the foundations of democracy and promoting inclusive, representative governance.
This new institution will be led by Barry Moussa Barqué, who succeeds Koudjolou Dogo, who had served as the interim president due to his seniority.
This move symbolizes not only respect for democratic principles but also a transition to a new era of Togolese politics, where all sectors of society can actively participate in strategic and legislative decisions.
One of the major achievements of this new Senate structure lies in the composition of its bureau. Consisting of nine members, including three vice presidents, two quaestors, and three parliamentary secretaries, the bureau represents diverse sectors of Togolese society. This diversity, far from being a mere compromise, embodies a model of governance that promotes unity in diversity, a fundamental principle of President Faure Gnassingbé’s political project.
The adoption of the internal regulations, which accompanied the election of Barry Moussa Barqué, formally marks the beginning of the Senate’s operations, positioning it as a key player in the country’s institutional balance.
It should be noted that the Senate will convene for its first session on April 3, two days after that of the Legislative Assembly.
By promoting a bicameral institution, Faure Gnassingbé reaffirms his vision of more inclusive, democratic governance that is closer to the concerns of the citizens. The adoption of the internal regulations, the establishment of a diverse bureau, and the start of the first ordinary session on April 3 are all signs of a democracy in progress, where every Togolese citizen has a role to play in the building of the nation.
