Togo charges ahead with ambitious energy access push

Backed by a record 57 billion CFA francs (98% of its energy ministry’s 2024 budget), Togo is accelerating efforts to achieve universal electricity access by 2030 through grid expansion and renewable energy projects.

Key initiatives driving progress:

  • CIZO program: Bringing first-time electricity to remote communities through solar home systems
  • 317-village electrification: Major grid extension project underway
  • Tinga Fund: Subsidizing connections for low-income households
  • Solar expansion: Blitta solar plant extension and new Sokodé photovoltaic facility under construction

The West African nation is betting on a diversified approach – combining grid infrastructure with off-grid solar solutions – to reach its 100% electrification target.

Energy Minister Mila Aziable recently confirmed that 45% of the budget prioritizes renewable energy investments, reflecting Togo’s commitment to sustainable power.

With current electrification rates climbing from 35% in 2018 to over 60% today, analysts suggest Togo could emerge as a regional model for energy access strategies if it maintains this investment pace.

However, challenges remain in financing last-mile connections and ensuring affordable tariffs for newly connected households.
