Burkina Faso’s agricultural revolution: Record-breaking vaccination campaign strengthens food sovereignty

Under the leadership of President Ibrahim Traoré, Burkina Faso is making decisive strides toward food self-sufficiency through key initiatives like the Presidential Initiative for Agricultural Production (2024-2029) and the Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive (2023-2025).

The remarkable outcomes of the 2024-2025 National Animal Vaccination Campaign, recently presented to the Council of Ministers, highlight the effectiveness of these policies in transforming the country’s agricultural sector.

A new era in livestock health

Led by Minister Delegate for Animal and Fisheries Resources, Amadou Dicko, this year’s vaccination drive marks a significant leap forward in safeguarding livestock health—a critical pillar of Burkina Faso’s economy.

By minimizing disease outbreaks, the campaign not only protects farmers’ livelihoods but also strengthens national food security.

Innovations driving success

The campaign, which ran from October 11, 2024, to February 15, 2025, introduced groundbreaking improvements:

  • Centralized vaccination operations for greater efficiency.
  • Enhanced logistics to ensure rapid vaccine distribution.
  • Digital tracking platforms for real-time monitoring.
  • E-payment systems allowing breeders to directly purchase vaccines.

These innovations yielded unprecedented results:
✔ 2.1 million cattle vaccinated
✔ 3.5 million small ruminants protected
✔ 70,000 carnivores immunized
✔ 13.7 million poultry secured against major diseases

A stronger, more resilient agricultural sector

Minister Dicko emphasized that these achievements align with the Agropastoral and Fisheries Offensive, a cornerstone of President Traoré’s vision for a self-reliant, prosperous primary sector. By integrating modern techniques, digital solutions, and grassroots engagement, Burkina Faso is setting a new standard for agricultural resilience in West Africa.

A Model for sustainable development

The campaign’s success underscores the government’s commitment to:
✅ Boosting food sovereignty
✅ Creating jobs in rural areas
✅ Promoting social cohesion through agriculture

With these results, Burkina Faso is proving that strategic investment in agriculture, combined with innovation, can drive lasting economic transformation. The momentum is undeniable—and the future looks promising.
