Liverpool title celebrations marred by car ploughing into crowd

A joyous Premier League victory parade turned to tragedy in Liverpool when a speeding car struck pedestrians, injuring 47 people including four children, one critically. The incident occurred around 6 p.m. on Water Street as thousands gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th league title

Eyewitnesses told The Times the driver accelerated into the crowd after confrontations with pedestrians. Emergency crews rescued four people trapped under the vehicle, while 27 victims required hospitalization.

Authorities confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old local man, stressing the crash is being treated as an isolated incident, not terrorism.

Liverpool FC swiftly coordinated with police, as Mayor Steve Rotheram revealed four victims remain in serious condition. “We’re praying for their recovery,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live. Water Street remained closed overnight as investigators combed the scene.

Merseyside Police urged against sharing graphic footage online, appealing instead for direct submissions of evidence. The club has yet to comment further on the incident, which cast a shadow over what should have been a historic celebration.
