Diplomacy/ Togo responds to U.S. visa restrictions with call for citizen responsibility

The Togolese government has formally addressed the United States’ recent visa restrictions targeting several African nations, including Togo. Foreign Minister Robert Dussey clarified the measure through an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), framing it not as political sanction but as a legitimate immigration enforcement action.

Minister Dussey acknowledged America’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws, noting the restrictions stem from documented abuses by some Togolese nationals particularly visa overstays.

“These individual violations undermine decades of bilateral trust,” he stated, emphasizing how such actions tarnish Togo’s international reputation despite being committed by a minority.

The minister highlighted the strategic importance of U.S.-Togo relations, which span security cooperation and economic partnerships.

He urged citizens especially travellers and visa applicants to demonstrate greater adherence to host countries’ regulations, stressing that national credibility depends on diaspora conduct.

This rare public appeal underscores Lomé’s proactive approach to preventing further mobility restrictions while diplomatically balancing sovereignty concerns with partnership preservation.

The statement reflects growing African governments’ emphasis on citizen accountability in international relations.
