Togo: 30 new secondary schools created to improve access to secondary education

The Togolese government has just taken a major step in its policy of democratizing education with the official creation of 30 new General Education Colleges (CEG) across the national territory. The decree, signed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MEPS) in April 2025, aims to significantly expand educational opportunities, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas that often lack adequate school infrastructure.

These new schools will be evenly distributed across the seven Regional Education Directorates (DRE), ensuring balanced territorial coverage in line with the government’s commitment to equal opportunities for all Togolese children:

  • Grand Lomé: 4 new colleges, including CEG Devimé and Senoukopé
  • Maritime Region: 6 institutions, including Djassémé and Agové Centre
  • Plateaux East: 6 colleges, such as Dapaong Copé and Kpévé
  • Plateaux West: 4 colleges, including Toklolo
  • Central Region: 5 institutions, notably CEG Bila
  • Kara Region: 3 new colleges, including Omalo
  • Savanes Region: 2 institutions, including CEG Barkoissi

These 30 schools are scheduled to open in time for the upcoming school year—a prospect that has already brought joy to many families in the affected communities. This expansion of educational access supports Togo’s ongoing efforts to increase secondary school enrollment, reduce travel distances for students, and ease overcrowding in existing schools.

With this strategic decision, the Togolese government reaffirms its determination to invest in the future of its youth, making education a key driver of sustainable development, social inclusion, and territorial equity. This ambitious policy, backed by concrete resources, is fully aligned with the goals of the Government Roadmap 2025, which places education at the heart of national priorities.
