Burkina Faso: Gaoua University Hospital, the government continues its policy of major construction projects despite challenges

In a context marked by numerous challenges, the Burkinabe government continues to steadfastly pursue its policy of major infrastructure projects. On Saturday, August 2, 2025, Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo visited Gaoua for an on-site inspection of the future University Regional Hospital Center (CHRU), a flagship healthcare infrastructure project.

With a total cost of 45.9 billion CFA francs, this large-scale project aims to provide the South-West region with a state-of-the-art referral hospital. Spanning 25 hectares, the facility will have a capacity of 306 beds and will be equipped with cutting-edge medical technology, including an operating theater, a pediatric emergency unit, medical imaging services, a psychiatric ward, and intensive care units.

According to Judicaël Tapsoba, project manager at Ellipse Projects Belgium, the company in charge of construction, the physical progress of the site stood at 54.62% as of June 30, 2025. With a contractual deadline of 36 months, the hospital is expected to be delivered by December 30, 2026.

During his visit, the Head of Government inspected the various buildings under construction and held discussions with technicians and administrative officials about the current phases of work and the technical challenges being faced. He praised the quality of execution, adherence to the timeline, and the dedication of the teams on the ground.

“This project, launched on November 30, 2023, by the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, is a priority for our government. It was important to come and assess the progress on site. What we’ve seen today is encouraging and reflects a collective will to deliver a quality infrastructure,” the Prime Minister stated.

Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo also encouraged the workers and technicians, urging them to maintain the pace in order to complete the project within the set timeframe.

This visit is part of a rigorous monitoring system established by the government to ensure efficiency and transparency in the implementation of major projects, which are crucial to improving the living conditions of the population, especially in the Djôrô region.
