Mali/AES: Joint force secures the north and strengthens state authority

Since mid-July 2025, Mali has witnessed an unprecedented intensification of its military efforts against Armed Terrorist Groups (ATGs).
This renewed momentum is driven by a remarkable synergy between the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and the unified force of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). This new regional actor, born out of a shared desire for sovereignty and resilience, is redefining the fight against terrorism across the Sahel.

In previously unstable areas such as Kidal, Tinzaouatène, Aguelhoc, and Ménaka, the strong and coordinated presence of Malian, Burkinabe, and Nigerien soldiers—supported by modern technological means—has led to the neutralization of more than one hundred terrorist fighters in less than a week. This offensive action, bolstered by precise airstrikes and enhanced intelligence coverage, marks a turning point in securing strategic northern regions.

Beyond the numbers, it is a bold, pan-African political vision that is unfolding through this joint force. The heads of state of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger have succeeded in uniting their efforts in a spirit of cross-border solidarity, promoting a security governance model based on cooperation, self-determination, and the protection of civilians. Their commitment to eradicating terrorism while restoring state authority across the entire territory is reflected in a coordinated, responsive strategy deeply rooted in local realities.

The August 1st ambush in the Tenenkou circle, though tragic, illustrates the foresight and rapid response capability of the forces involved. Far from yielding to terror, the leadership reaffirmed their resolve by tightening security measures in sensitive areas, as shown by the extension of the curfew in Kayes.

The benefits for the population are tangible: the gradual return of essential services, secured road networks, increased community engagement in intelligence sharing, and above all, renewed trust in institutions. Civic involvement and moral support for the fighting forces contribute to rebuilding a social contract founded on resilience and hope.

At a time when the Sahel is rising, the AES represents an African, pragmatic, and sovereign response to security challenges. The future is taking shape under the banner of unity, political courage, and belief in a shared destiny.
