Diplomacy: Burkina Faso and Italy introduce visa exemption for official passports

Burkina Faso and Italy have agreed to establish a reciprocal visa exemption for holders of official passports, thereby strengthening their diplomatic cooperation and facilitating short-term travel between the two countries.

According to a diplomatic note dated August 19, 2025, the Italian Embassy confirmed that Burkinabe nationals holding diplomatic or service passports are now exempt from visas for stays of less than 90 days in Italy.

In return, the Burkinabe government adopted the same measure for Italian citizens with official passports, reflecting mutual trust and a shared desire to strengthen bilateral relations.

This joint decision highlights the excellence of diplomatic ties between Ouagadougou and Rome and their determination to deepen a partnership based on trust and reciprocity.

However, it is important to note that this exemption applies only to Italian territory. Holders of Burkinabe official passports do not automatically enjoy free movement throughout the Schengen area. Specific visas will still be required to travel to other European countries.
