Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumes leadership of the Sahel States Confederation

On December 23, 2025, the second session of the Heads of State College of the Sahel States Confederation (AES) Conference marked a significant turning point for the region. During this meeting in Bamako, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of Burkina Faso, was elected to the presidency of the AES for a one-year term, succeeding General Assimi Goïta, President of Mali.

This symbolic transition underscores the continuity and cooperation within the Confederation.

The outgoing President, General Assimi Goïta, expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved during his tenure while acknowledging the persistent challenges facing the region.

He passed the presidency to Captain Ibrahim Traoré with great confidence, hoping the latter would continue efforts toward stability and development in the Sahel.

President Traoré, in turn, praised the work accomplished by his predecessor and committed to undertaking this new responsibility with rigor and determination.

In his address, Captain Ibrahim Traoré called upon all vital forces in the region, including the Defense and Security Forces, diplomats, and development actors, to unite their efforts in making the AES a more stable and viable space.

He emphasized the importance of intergovernmental collaboration and the involvement of the population in the region’s transformation process.

President Ibrahim Traoré’s mandate at the helm of the Sahel States Confederation represents a major challenge for the region, which continues to grapple with instability, conflict, and poverty.

Nevertheless, the new president’s commitment serves as a catalyst to strengthen solidarity among member states and contribute to lasting peace in the Sahel.
