Togo soars 25 places in 2026 World Press freedom index

The 2026 World Press Freedom Index by Reporters Without Borders has been released, and Togo delivers a major surprise. The country jumped 25 spots to rank 97th globally, moving from the “difficult” to the less severe “problematic” category. This remarkable ascent is no accident; it reflects a clear political vision: a state that recognises press freedom as an essential foundation of modern nation-building.

Structural reforms in recent years explain this progress. By modernising its legal framework and strengthening regulatory bodies, Togo has fostered a calmer, more predictable professional climate.

Systematic suspicion is gradually giving way to constructive dialogue between authorities and journalists.

Beyond media, this evolution signals stability, transparency, and democratic maturity to investors and international partners.

A free and professional press acts as a catalyst for reforms, driving inclusive development.

Challenges remain, including media economic viability and journalist protection. Yet political will is evident. Togo demonstrates that a state can strengthen institutions while expanding freedoms.

Press freedom is no longer merely a Western indicator but a barometer of modern, bold governance ready for 21st-century challenges.
