Benin: Are we heading for an opportunistic constitutional revision?
In a statement released on Friday, January 12, 2024, the Beninese political party «Les Démocrates» has decided to break its silence regarding the persistent rumors surrounding a potential constitutional revision. These speculations, hinting at the possibility of another term for President Patrice Talon, have gained momentum in recent days, prompting the political party associated with former Head of State Boni Yayi to clarify its stance.
The statement, issued by the party’s communication secretary, Guy Mitokpè, aimed to reassure party members and the entire Beninese population about the party’s commitment to its promises.
The document specifically emphasized the party’s categorical refusal of any opportunistic constitutional amendment and called for serenity, urging the public to remain calm in the face of these persistent rumors.
Previously, Les Démocrates had denounced an alleged plot underway against the Beninese people, particularly after a meeting between institutional presidents.
In a previous statement, the party had affirmed its unwavering commitment to the Beninese population.
Regarding the position of the party’s president, Boni Yayi, Les Démocrates reiterated that he would oppose any maneuver for constitutional revision that would pave the way for a third term or a disguised third term.
The opposition political party reaffirmed its commitment to the promises made to the people during the last legislative elections.
Although the government attempted to reassure the Beninese by denying any plans for constitutional revision in a recent media release, concerns persist within the population.
It is crucial that these rumors do not escalate into turmoil, risking the country’s descent into a period of unrest.
