André Onana addresses controversy amidst Cameroon’s AFCON opener

In the wake of Cameroon’s 1-1 draw against Guinea in their opening match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), goalkeeper André Onana spoke out about the recent controversy surrounding his delayed arrival in the national team camp.

While Manchester United played at Old Trafford on the eve of Cameroon’s clash, Onana remained with the club until January 14, missing the preparation period with the national team.

Despite being present at the stadium, the goalkeeper was not included in the squad for the match, with Fabrice Ondoa taking up the goalkeeping duties.

In an interview with New World Sport, Onana hinted at a brewing unease within the national team.

He expressed a desire for unity, stating, «I have a lot to say, but I won’t say it here because we are in competition. The most important thing is unity. We are here to win the CAN. I ask the fans to support us in good and bad times».

Acknowledging his role as a leader, Onana continued, «I take my responsibilities, and that’s why I’m here. I don’t want people to criticize the younger players. Keep criticizing me; I’m used to it. I do what is right for my country. It’s like choosing between my father and mother, but my country comes first, that’s why I’m here. We are together».

Onana’s comments suggest a commitment to the collective goal of winning the C, while also addressing the complexities and challenges faced within the national team dynamics.
