Niger: Does General TIANI’s country want to join the Brics Group?

On January 29, the Prime Minister of the transitional government in Niger, Mr. Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine, and other members of the CNSP held discussions with a delegation from the Brics bloc on a working visit to Niamey.

The Brics bloc, initially consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, recently expanded to include five new members, namely Saudi Arabia, Iran, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and Ethiopia, effective from January 1, 2024.

This meeting follows the group’s decision in August 2023, during its 15th summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, to open up to other countries for broader economic influence.

The visit to Niamey by the Brics delegation comes after the Nigerien Prime Minister’s friendly and working visits to Moscow, Russia, and Tehran, Iran, further solidifying bilateral relations.

Facing significant economic and financial sanctions from ECOWAS and UEMOA, the Nigerien authorities are actively working to ensure the economic stability and implement measures for defense and socio-economic development in the country.
