Niger: Is the sulphurous former President Mahamadou Issoufou in turmoil with the denunciation of the military agreement?

The current developments in the news suggest a range of potential outcomes concerning those involved in the controversial military agreement allowing the establishment of a US military base in Agadez.

Attention is now focused on former President Mahamadou Issoufou following the recent denunciation of this contentious agreement signed with the Americans in 2012 and activated in 20213.

As a key figure in mentoring President Mohammed Bazoum, Mahamadou Issoufou has become deeply unpopular among the Nigerien populace, much like his “protégé”, due to perceived mismanagement during his tenure.

Accusations of mismanagement, including nepotism and compromising Niger’s strategic interests, have long been levelled against Issoufou’s administration, leading to widespread criticism and accusations of deceit.

The once-idealized image of Mahamadou Issoufou has now been shattered, particularly with the perceived betrayal by his successor, contributing to his downfall.

The revelation of unsavory details within the military agreement, for which Issoufou played a significant role, has further eroded public trust.

In light of these developments, calls for accountability have intensified, with demands for Mahamadou Issoufou’s arrest gaining traction among Nigerien citizens.

This sentiment has been amplified by the denunciation of the military agreements by the CNSP, which emphasizes the need for adherence to legal procedures outlined in the constitution.

Civil society organizations are mobilizing peaceful demonstrations across the country to condemn what they perceive as disastrous governance under Mahamadou Issoufou’s leadership.

While it is expected that the Americans will eventually withdraw, mirroring the French departure in December, there is a growing insistence on the CNSP taking decisive action to bring all parties involved in the controversial agreement to justice.

Detailed examination of the agreement’s inconsistencies is also anticipated as part of this process.
