Paris 2024 Paralympic Games begin with a historic and dazzling opening ceremony
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games commenced in grand style with a spectacular opening ceremony that captivated the city and the world. For the first time, the Paralympics’ opening festivities were held outside a traditional stadium, with the iconic Champs-Elysees serving as the backdrop for a historic celebration of athletic excellence and resilience.
The ceremony unfolded on a perfect summer evening in the heart of Paris, with Place de la Concorde hosting the main event.
Athletes from around the world paraded down the famous Avenue des Champs-Elysees, beginning their journey at the “Arc de Triomphe” and ending at “Place de la Concorde”.
The parade was a public spectacle, with organizers estimating that 65,000 spectators lined the route, enjoying the unique opportunity to witness this momentous occasion free of charge before the ticketed ceremony began.
This marks the first time France has hosted a summer Paralympic Games, and the excitement is palpable as the country prepares to welcome around 4,400 athletes from a record 168 delegations.
Over the next 11 days, these athletes will compete in 22 sports, with 549 gold medals up for grabs, making this one of the largest and most anticipated Paralympic Games in history.
Tony Estanguet, the president of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, addressed the gathered athletes and spectators with a powerful message, declaring the start of “the Paralympic revolution.”
Estanguet praised the athletes for their determination and resilience, emphasizing their role in challenging societal perceptions and inspiring change.
“What makes you revolutionaries is that, when they told you ‘no’, you continued,” Estanguet said, urging the world to embrace the athletes’ message of limitless potential and inclusivity. “Tonight, you are inviting us to change our perspectives, change our attitudes, change our society to finally give every person their full place.”
As the Games begin, Paris is set to become the epicenter of Paralympic sport, celebrating the achievements of athletes who continue to break barriers and redefine what is possible.
