AFCON Qualifiers 2025: Burkina Faso secures early qualification with victory over Burundi

Burkina Faso has officially secured its place in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a convincing 2-0 win against Burundi on Sunday during the fourth round of qualifiers.

The match, held at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny, saw the Stallions continue their dominance over Burundi, following up on their 4-1 victory in the first leg.

The Burkinabe side got off to a flying start with Mohamed Konaté opening the scoring in just the 5th minute. Despite attempts by Burundi to fight back, Burkina Faso remained in control.

The game was sealed deep into stoppage time when Bertrand Traoré coolly converted a penalty in the 94th minute, securing the three points that guaranteed their qualification.

With 10 points from four matches, Burkina Faso now tops Group L, ahead of Senegal, which has 7 points and a game in hand. Senegal could also book their place in the tournament with a win over Malawi in their upcoming match.

Meanwhile, Burundi’s hopes hang by a thread, as they sit with just 3 points and must rely on Senegal faltering to keep their slim qualification chances alive.

Burkina Faso’s early qualification underscores the strength of Brama Traoré’s squad, which now turns its focus to preparing for the final tournament in Morocco.
