Justice: French woman’s testimony exposes harrowing ordeal of marital rape

In a landmark case in France, Gisèle Pelicot, 71, testified in court on Wednesday against her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, who stands accused of drugging and facilitating her rape by dozens of men over a decade. The trial, which began in September, has captured national attention, with Ms. Pelicot becoming a symbol of strength for victims of sexual violence.

Speaking in an Avignon courtroom, Ms. Pelicot emphasized her decision to waive anonymity and demand an open trial, saying, “It’s not for us to have shame—it’s for them.”

She called on other survivors to step forward, stating, “I want all women who have been raped to know they should not feel ashamed.”

Ms. Pelicot recounted her shock at discovering that her husband, whom she trusted for 50 years, had drugged her and invited strangers to assault her while she was unconscious between 2010 and 2020.

Dominique admitted to the allegations, which were documented in video recordings.

The trial has sparked widespread outrage and feminist marches across France, with activists pushing for legal reforms to strengthen the country’s rape laws.

Despite many defendants denying responsibility, arguing they were unaware of Ms. Pelicot’s unconscious state, the case has highlighted significant gaps in the understanding of consent.

A verdict is expected in December, as the trial continues to unfold amid intense public interest.
