Niger: Rise in power of the FDS, the efforts made by the Nigerien Government under the aegis of the Head of State Abdourahamane TIANI

The Nigerien government, under the leadership of the transitional President, Brigadier General Abdourahamane Tiani, has prioritized the eradication of terrorism and the country’s development. In a year of significant transformation, substantial efforts have been made to bolster the operational strength of the defense and security forces (FDS).

In an exclusive interview with Radiotélévision du Niger (RTN) on December 25, 2024, President Tiani detailed the strides made by the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) to address security challenges.

Over 25,000 personnel have been recruited into various branches of the FDS, including the army, gendarmerie, national guard, and police.

This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for security and protection across the country.

A key component of these efforts is the establishment of the Protection and Development Force, designed to integrate security operations with local development initiatives.

To support these changes, more than 150 billion CFA francs have been allocated for equipping new recruits and addressing financial shortfalls inherited from the previous administration.

This funding focuses on acquiring essential anti-terrorism resources and enhancing border security.

Despite obstacles in procuring equipment due to strained relations with France, President Tiani emphasized the critical role of training in fortifying military capacity.

For a soldier, training spares bloodshed,” he remarked, underscoring the importance of intensive training programs offered domestically and abroad through strategic partnerships.

The President reassured Nigeriens of the government’s unwavering commitment to achieving military self-reliance and addressing threats decisively, ensuring the nation’s security and stability.
