Football/ Rudi Garcia takes charge of Belgium: A new era for the Red Devils

Belgium’s national team is turning a new page with the appointment of Rudi Garcia as their head coach. After weeks of speculation, the Belgian Football Federation officially unveiled the 60-year-old Frenchman on Friday, following a period of turbulence under Domenico Tedesco.

Tedesco, who succeeded Roberto Martinez, led the Red Devils for two years with mixed results (12 wins, 6 draws, 6 losses).

His tenure was marred by controversies, including a fallout with star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who refused to play under him, and absences from key players Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.

The federation ended his contract on January 17, thanking him publicly for his contributions while privately seeking his replacement.

Rudi Garcia, known for his stints at Lyon and Marseille, emerged as the preferred candidate after impressing during interviews.

His experience and tactical acumen swayed Belgian officials, despite speculation linking Thierry Henry and Michel Preud’homme to the role.

Garcia’s appointment, made without a formal press release, was announced alongside a press conference scheduled for Friday afternoon.

The Frenchman, last seen managing Napoli briefly in 2023, will now lead Belgium’s efforts to regain momentum on the international stage. Expectations are high as the Red Devils aim to rebuild their squad and ambitions.
