Chad marks a historic step toward sovereignty with French troop withdrawal

On January 31, 2025, Chad turned a significant page in its history with the complete withdrawal of French troops from its soil. This decisive move, orchestrated by President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, officially ends the longstanding military agreement with its former colonial power.

By opting for a fully autonomous defense strategy, the Chadian leader demonstrates a firm commitment to strengthening national sovereignty and eliminating foreign influence over the country’s military affairs.

In a speech brimming with resolve, President Déby Itno emphasized the importance of Chad relying solely on its own resources to safeguard its security.

“True national sovereignty is never a gift; it is earned,” he declared, honouring the sacrifices of past generations who fought for the nation’s independence.

He urged all Chadians to embrace a heightened sense of vigilance and patriotism, identifying the development of a robust national army as an absolute priority.

This historic shift aligns with a broader movement across Africa toward asserting greater sovereignty.

By reclaiming full control over its defense policy, Chad joins a growing number of African nations, particularly within the Sahel States Alliance (AES), striving to build their own strength—free from external oversight.
